St Gemma’s Hospice is a local, independent charity with almost 50 years of expertise in providing specialist end of life care to the people of Leeds. St Gemma’s Hospice offers the best possible care and compassionate support to local people facing life-threatening and terminal illness. We specialize in pain relief and symptom control to help people live as well as possible for as long as possible. This is known as palliative care.
More about St Gemma's Hospice
It’s a friendly and welcoming place at the heart of the local community, offering a wide range of expert services to support patients and their families, both at the Hospice and in the community.
The Hospice provides in-patient care but is not just a building; most of St Gemma’s patients are supported in they place they want to stay – often their own homes.
St Gemma’s welcomes and provides care to everyone regardless of people’s age, gender, disability, race, religion, sexual orientation or diagnosis.
All St Gemma’s services are provided completely free of charge.
Care is based on a simple idea – that the person is more than the illness. Each of us – sick or unwell – has unique physical, social and spiritual needs. St Gemma’s tries to respond to these needs in ways that place the highest value on respect, choice and empowerment.
In total in 23/24 St Gemma’s supported over 3000 local people and there were 13,742 contacts made with patients either face to face or on the phone. We cared for 503 patients in the Hospice In-Patient unit and 1382 local people were referred to St Gemma’s care for the first time.

£25 provides expert telephone advice and support to a patient at home.
£50 pays for an hour of end of life care.
£100 could provide a specialist bereavement support session for someone struggling to cope with the loss of a loved one.

£500 pays for a patient or their carer to benefit from a visit to St Gemma’s Out-Patients, to have a consultation with a doctor, enjoy a therapy session, or take part in a group activity.
£750 will help fund a syringe driver, a battery operated pump that provides continuous, effective pain relief.
£1044 will provide expert, individually tailored care for a patient on the in-patient unit for 24 hours.
