The Winchester Off-Road Challenge returns for its fifth year!
After welcoming over 1,000 participants last year, this popular Hampshire hike and walking event is back and better than ever. Designed for those seeking a scenic countryside adventure to kick-start their New Year, this event offers a memorable experience for walkers of all abilities.
Start 2026 with purpose and take on a rewarding challenge that blends beautiful landscapes with a sense of achievement. Whether you're a seasoned walker or new to organised hiking events, this well-loved challenge showcases some of the finest off-road routes near Winchester.
...Set in the stunning Hampshire countryside just outside Winchester, the course follows picturesque tracks, bridleways, and footpaths surrounding the famous Farley Mount. This local landmark stands at the heart of the route and is a highlight of the Half Marathon distance Challenge.
The terrain is rolling rather than steep, making it an ideal early-season challenge, enjoyable yet fulfilling, with plenty of scenic woodland sections and sweeping views across the Hampshire Downs. The Half Marathon distance includes one small but memorable ascent to Farley Mount, offering a rewarding sense of accomplishment and a spectacular outlook.
We welcome participants of all experience levels and offer two challenge distances:
- Half Marathon (21k) Walking Challenge
- 12k Walking Challenge
Upon completing your chosen distance, you'll receive a high-quality medal, a refreshing cool drink, and a selection of finisher goodies, making this a truly uplifting way to begin your year.

Pick your distance
Rolling hills and varied off-road terrain. You'll enjoy a mix of woodland paths, open trails, and gentle climbs. A satisfying challenge that feels rewarding rather than tough.
Gently rolling trails with small ups and downs. Mostly wide, walkable paths with good footing throughout. A great introduction to trail hiking while still feeling comfortable and fun.

Things to note
- You will collect your hiking bib number on arrival at the event. Please bring your QR code with you on the day and head to 'Registration' for collection.
- Save The Event Phone Number: 02033 717 156.
- Bib numbers should be displayed clearly on the front of you.
- We are plastic free, please bring a reusable cup / bottle for use at the water stations.
- There will be First Aid support located at the on-course aid stations and event centre.
Spectators
Spectators are always welcome at the Winchester Hiking Trail. We love that spectators further add to the fantastic atmosphere at the event.
Course Signage
The hike will be clearly signed using PINK arrows and PINK tape.
We will also mark hazards and road junctions with 'Caution' signs. Please take care at these points.
Event Day Timings
7:15 am* - Venue Opens
The car park opens to allow hikers to prepare themselves for the hike and grab a coffee.
9:00 AM* - All Hiking Distances Start!
The hike kicks off as the walkers cross the start line.
2:00 pm* - The Hike Finishes / Cut-off Time
Your adventure finishes, you will cross the finish line and collect your bag full of goodies.
2:30 pm* - The Event Centre Closes
The venue closes.
